Seismic assessment of old masonry buildings: Case studies

The preservation of the old masonry buildings and their structural safety under earthquake actions is an increasing concern. The observed poor seismic performance of these buildings is, mainly, due to the degradation of structural materials, the structural changes they suffered during service time, in the absence of code regulation, and they were built before the seismic codes provisions exists. In this presentation, results from the global seismic performance and the effectiveness of the strengthening solutions of two old masonry buildings located in Lisbon are presented and discussed. The results obtained using nonlinear static (pushover) analysis, were used to assess their seismic performance according to the N2 Method, to identify possible areas of the buildings with deficient structural capacity to resist against the seismic action and to identify areas where out-of-plane mechanisms could be triggered.
