The Faculty of Dramatic Arts in Cetinje began its operations in the 1994/95 academic year as a department within the Faculty of Fine Arts, and in 1997 it became an independent university unit.
Since its establishment, the main mission of the Faculty has been to provide a high level of education and artistic development for its students by developing quality study programs and modules in various fields of dramatic and audiovisual arts, as well as their professional integration into the labor market. The activities carried out in this regard over the past twenty years have also contributed to the development of a strong professional base within the entire cultural and creative sector of Montenegro. Former students of the Faculty of Dramatic Arts in Cetinje are today important figures in artistic, cultural, and media production in Montenegro.
The Faculty of Dramatic Arts organizes undergraduate and postgraduate studies in the fields of drama and theater, film and media, and by educating future actors, producers, theater and film directors, and dramaturgs, it represents the main source of personnel in the dramatic arts in our country.
The work at the Faculty is characterized by a strong connection between educational, artistic, and research activities, quality implementation of artistic education at all levels of academic studies, teaching organized in small groups, excellent teaching staff, exceptional dedication to students, and the possibility for students to participate in significant projects already during their studies. Teaching takes place through creative workshops, led by experienced educators – renowned contemporary creators in the fields of theater and film – as well as through lectures by theorists of art and culture, which interact with creative practice.
The Faculty has enabled professional integration for over 200 of its former students. Our students are now recognized throughout the region as accomplished theater and film directors, actors, producers, dramaturgs, cultural managers, media professionals, and practitioners in various fields of the arts.
The public has shown great interest in the work of the Faculty since its founding, and this interest has been increasing year by year, thanks to annual exams open to the public, as well as other projects realized by the Faculty. Strengthening and connecting with cultural and media institutions, the artistic work of our teachers and collaborators, who play leading roles in numerous events in the field of dramatic and audiovisual arts, as well as the work of our graduates, today’s successful creators, constantly enhances the reputation of the Faculty. Today, the cultural, artistic, and media community recognizes the importance, role, and significance that the Faculty of Dramatic Arts holds in the country.
In addition to academic programs, the Faculty of Dramatic Arts has carried out and organized a series of significant extracurricular activities and projects over the years. These activities include the organization of various artistic workshops, summer schools, scientific conferences, round tables, seminars, and various artistic research projects in the fields of film, theater, acting, dramaturgy, film, television, and theater direction. All activities were carried out in collaboration with institutional partners from the public, private, and non-governmental sectors at the international, national, and local levels. The list of these partners includes, primarily: the Ministry of Culture of Montenegro, UNESCO, UNICEF, the National Public Radio-Television Service of Montenegro (RTCG), the Montenegrin National Theater, as well as the Royal Theater Zetski dom, national and regional festivals, and cultural centers, as well as other regional drama faculties in Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia, and Slovenia. Therefore, the Faculty of Dramatic Arts in Cetinje is publicly recognized not only within Montenegro but also in regional projects in which it actively participates.
The Faculty continuously and systematically works on improving the quality of its programs. In the new, accredited model of undergraduate studies at the Faculty of Dramatic Arts, since the 2017/2018 academic year, teaching has been organized into three study programs: Acting, Film and Media, and Drama and Theater.
In accordance with its institutional orientation, the Facultys main mission will continue to be, by promoting dramatic and audiovisual artistic education and creation, to continuously improve and strengthen artistic practice and production in Montenegro, as well as to ensure the professionalization of the entire cultural, artistic, and media sector in Montenegro.
