The Historical Institute of Montenegro is the oldest scientific research institution in the country. It was established on July 3, 1948, in Cetinje under the name Institute for the Study of the History of the Montenegrin People.

The Institute is engaged in:

  • Research and analysis of topics related to Montenegrin and general history;
  • Publishing studies, monographs, collections, thematic document compilations, and bibliographies;
  • Issuing the journal Istorijski zapisi (Historical Records);
  • Training and professional development of scientific personnel.

The journal Istorijski zapisi continues the tradition of the oldest scientific journal in Montenegro, Zapisi, which has been published since 1927. It is indexed in international databases such as CEOL – Central and Eastern European Online, EBSCO (Historical Abstracts with Full Text), EuroPub, Scientific Indexing Services, Slavic Humanities Index, Google Scholar, ROAD, ICI World of Journals database, and COBISS.

Through its research activities, organization of scientific events (conferences, round tables, and panel discussions), and collaboration with academic institutions and scholars both domestically and internationally, the Institute has established itself as a distinguished scientific institution.

The Institute’s library holds over 50,000 volumes and a valuable collection of archival documents.
