Dr. Slavica Petrović – recipient of the annual award of the University of Montenegro

Dr. Slavica Petović, a scientific advisor at the Institute of Marine Biology, recently received the prestigious annual Award from the University of Montenegro for outstanding contributions to scientific research and the international reputation of the University. The award was presented to her by the Rector of the University of Montenegro, Prof. Dr. Vladimir Božović, at a ceremonial session of the University Senate.

For the past 20 years, Dr. Petović has been dedicated to studying marine life on the seabed. Her research topic is exceptionally complex and requires expertise and qualifications for conducting underwater research, which have been successfully realized thanks to teamwork.

Throughout her career, Dr. Petović has actively participated in numerous national and international projects, resulting in significant decisions such as the protection of parts of the marine ecosystem, both in the form of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and within Natura 2000 areas.

Her involvement in monitoring the impact of climate change on the marine ecosystem, as well as researching the occurrence of new species, has resulted in numerous relevant documents and publications of scientific papers in this field. Last year, she co-authored four papers published in SCI-listed journals, while the number of published papers and presentations at national and international conferences exceeds 120.

At the Institute of Marine Biology, Dr. Petović has actively participated as a coordinator or team member in more than 40 international and national projects in the field of marine ecosystem research. Additionally, she is engaged as a mentor for doctoral students.

Dr. Petović is also a member of the working group for non-indigenous species within the SPA/RAC (Specially Protected Areas Regional Activity Centre) and the working group for vulnerable marine ecosystems and sustainable fish habitats within the GFCM (General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean).

Her tireless work and expertise in marine biology not only bring significant scientific contributions but also contribute to the preservation and protection of Montenegros marine ecosystem and the wider region.
