Lecture of ar. Vasilija Abramović, titled Towards architecture that feels, will be held Wednesday, 25th of April, 2018, at 12 o’clock, classroom 102 at the Faculty of Architecture.

Abramović will convey students her experience after completing studies at the Faculty of Architecture in Podgorica and going abroad for further education.

EDGE OF CHAOS – Installation of ar. Vasilija Abramović

Inspired by science of complexity and chaos the “Edge of Chaos” is an installation of the young architect from Podgorica,Vasilija Abramović, currently living and working in London, at one of the most prestigious schools of architecture in the world – Bartlett School of Architecture, at Interactive Architecture Lab.

Together with her colleagues - Ruairi Glynn, from Bartlett School of Architecture, and scientist Bas Overvelde from the AMOLF Institute in Amsterdam, this project manifests collaboration of science, art and technology. The architect collaborated with the scientist from Amsterdam, who previously published a research on geometric shapes (magazines Nature, Overvelde et al.) that have an ability of transformation and many structural states, and with her colleague from Bartlett designed an art installation thus answering the theme of an international competition for presenting Supernatural, stories of the worlds to come. Their proposal beat over 170 applicants and renowned artists and architects from all over the world.

Edge of Chaos installation has already begun its worldwide tour of 2018 and had been exhibited in the art gallery La Gaîté Lyrique in Paris from April 4th until July 15th. After this, the installation will find its place at the exhibition of Cinekid Festival in Amsterdam, October  2nd – 21st , at KIKK Festival in Namur, Belgium, November 1st-10th, and beginning 2019 at Lome town in Africa.

Installation was based upon the theory of chaos, well-known theory about the becoming of the universe, which speaks of transformation and emergence of life from chaos, mess, all to the highly ordered complex entities found in nature. Installation invites visitors to experience this rather thin thread between the highly-ordered and turbulent systems, comprised of 3 features. Approaching the installation, visitors will be able to see a robotized tree representing “Life” at the very center, surrounded with an inert “Cloud” that presents disorganized substance of the entropy universe, and as the third feature an interactive surface “Edge of Chaos”, where life begins to manifest itself. This interactive surface is composed of a hundred kinetic robotized geometric shapes networked together and activated by an algorithm from nature called the Cellular Automata. Activity and presence of people around the tree launches this space, which begins to transform and light up depending on the level of activation. Local interactions of individual visitors vivify different parts of this surface, launching a chain reaction, varying in response to the level of interaction and the current state of the surface leading to the activation of the tree. Once activated, tree and complex shapes on it symbolizing life and complexity reach the phase of dramatic robot movements and different sequences of lighting.

Ar. Abramović finished Undergraduate studies at the Faculty of Architecture in Podgorica as the honor student. She continued her schooling enrolling in master studies in Architecture in Prague, continuing onto doctoral studies with a topic of interactive architecture. Since 2017, Vasilija lives and works in London, at Bartlett, and deals in research and creation of what she calls the “new revolutionary architecture”, being architecture of the future, with adaptability, flexibility and possibility of responding to the needs of the user and the environment properties, using the latest technology. She is the winner of numerous awards, among which the Capital City Award 19 December, as well as multiple awards during studies and research grants from Czech Republic and Great Britain.

Vasilija gained work experience in architectural bureaus in Podgorica, Prague and London, working on “classical” architecture, always with a desire to create something new and different.
