Lecture of eminent Archaeologists at History Institute

On Tuesday, the 12th of April archaeologists and scientists prof. Dr. Gilliane Monnier and prof. Dr. Gilbert Tostevin (University of Minnesota, USA) and prof. Dr Blagoje Govedarica (Freie Universität Berlin, Germany) hold lectures.

 Director of the History Institute Dr. Radoslav Raspopovic greeted the lecturers and audience, including guests from the US Embassy, Center for Conservation and Archeology, and National Museum. Introducing the lecturers, He especially highlighted the contribution of Dr. Monnier in concluding the cooperation treaty between the University of Minnesota and the University of Montenegro in November 2019. History Institute, together with other Montenegrin institutions, is the official host to the American and German colleagues through Fulbright and Erasmus Mundus scholarships.

In the joint presentation, The lives of the Neanderthals at Crvena Stijena Dr. Monnier and Dr. Tostevin focused on the research history of one of the most well-known and important paleolithic sites that they have been researching for years. Possible modes of site preservation and technologies for further research were also presented. Their research so far shed light on the everyday life of Neanderthals and the beginning of migration in this area.

Dr. Govedarica in his lecture Sacral symbolism of the circle and ideological meaning of the funerary tumuls briefed the audience on the research of tumuls/gromile/mogile in the whole Eurasian space since their emergence in the 5th millennium BC and several millenniums of development, with the special attention to those in Montenegro, such as Mala and Velika Gruda.
