The Faculty of Metalurgy and Technology as a partner on the project Carbon-based Batteries and Supercapacitors (SUPERCAR)

The University of Montenegro Faculty of Metalurgy and Technology is a partner on new international project Carbon-based Batteries and Supercapacitors (SUPERCAR) which is approved within NATO program Science for Peace and Security, SPS, on February 4, 2021.

The goal of this project is to develop a new generation of batteries and supercapacitors which do not contain Lithium (Li), based on cheap and environmentally friendly nanotechnology of carbon obtained from biomass.

In addition to designing a new prototype Na-ion battery, SUPERCAR will provide a set of new nanoporous carbon electrodes for the next generation of rechargeable batteries and supercapacitors, relying on highly represented and readily available elements on Earth, such as Sodium (Na), Magnesium (Mg), Calcium (Ca) or Aluminum (Al).

Other project partners are National Chemistry Institute in Ljubljana and Faculty of Physical Chemistry in Belgrade.

By cooperating with partners from Slovenia and Serbia, the Montenegrin group will have the opportunity to further develop and strengthen this research area. The SUPERCAR project brings together these three institutions not only to improve their research capacities and resources, but also to make progress in future energy storage technology. The project will provide an opportunity for interested students to get involved in research on this current topic.

The project manager from the partner country of Montenegro is full prof. Veselinka Grudić, PhD and the managers from the partner countries of Slovenia and Serbia are full prof. Robert Dominiko, PhD and Milica Vujković, PhD.

The duration of the project is 36 months, and the total budget is 392 400 EUR of which 132.300 EUR belongs to the Montenegrin side.
