International Conference “Adriatic Biodiversity Protection- AdriBioPro 2019” (Kotor, Montenegro, 7-11 April 2019) organized by the Institute of Marine Biology (IMB), University of Montenegro will be partly supported by the project: “The study, protection and possible breeding of pen shell (Pinna nobilis) in the Boka Kotorska Bay” – PinnaSPOT. The project is product of an international collaboration established between IMB (leading partner), partners from Spain (The Catholic University of Valencia ”San Vicente Martyr” - Marine Research Institute IMEDMAR) and France (Oceanographic institute Paul Ricard), and also the Petrovic Njegos Foundation from Montenegro as honorary partner. The project is approved for funding by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation. PinnaSPOT project aims to improve the knowledge on the endangered Mediterranean endemic bivalve Pinna nobilis and the valuable environments where it inhabits in Boka Kotorska Bay for the implementation of regulations in the context of environmental impact assessment procedures.

In this regard, specific conference session will be focused on three years survey on population structure, population dynamics, ecophysiology, comparative study of P. nobilis genetics, and monitoring of the environmental parameters of the sites where it inhabits in the Boka Kotorska Bay, Montenegro; Calpe (Alicante), Spain; Embiez Island, France and Monaco. Special attention will be focused on the recent mass mortality event of P. nobilis populations occurring in the western Mediterranean through the research contribution of PinnaSPOT project partner institutions from Spain and France. Data gathered in the PinnaSPOT project will contribute to the preparation of management and protection plans for pen shell in Boka Kotorska Bay in the Adriatic Sea.
