Aims and mission




GOAL, MISSION AND TASKS OF THE FACULTY OF MARITIME STUDIES KOTOR  

The basic goal of the Faculty is to make competent higher education staff in maritime affairs, development research and creating scientific thought.

The Mission of the Faculty of Maritime Studies Kotor, as an academic unit, is to educate young, ambitious and high-quality people in the field of technical and social sciences through the application of modern methodological tools and methods in social and technical sciences (Maritime affairs), capable of contributing through their creative work in the development of their country and region in compliance with the modern European trends.  

The basic goal of the systematic education of future maritime professionals is to strengthen individual competences of individuals and making structures that will better correspond to future challenges of Montenegro in this sector.  

Upon completion of the studies, with acquired knowledge and skills, students will be able to get employment in institutions, both in Montenegro and worldwide, within the scope of activities related to maritime affairs.

Study programmes of technical profiles at the Faculty of Maritime Studies Kotor are very specific in that apart from the rules referring to university study programmes, they must also comply with specificities regarding the observance of international standards laid by the International Maritime Organization – IMO based in London. Therefore, these study programmes must align with the Convention STCW 78/95/10 and indirectly with other conventions of the IMO such as SOLAS 74/78, MARPOL 73/78. Montenegro all conventions and therefore they are obligatory from the aspect of national regulatory framework. In addition, the specificities of these study programmes are adapting to models of maritime education of the most developed maritime countries (especially the European Union and Norway) and the adoption of standards of the educational systems and seafarers training  - MET (Maritime Education and Training).

The tasks of the Faculty following on from the Mission are:

  • Development of the interest in studies
  • Quality education of student’s on bachelor, postgraduate and doctoral studies
  • Complementing and enhancing the structure and the content of the programme in line with the affirmative experience and modern practice
  • Enhancing learning through the exchanges of experience, study visits and mobility
  • Providing conditions for using contemporary information and communication technologies in work and education. This particularly relates to distance learning, primarily in the maritime profession.
  • The quality of final, specialist and doctoral papers
  • Development of scientific thinking and science
