Traditional Harvest in the Centre for Subtropical Cultures in Bar

In the collection plantation of domestic and foreign olive varieties at the Center for Subtropical Cultures of the Faculty of Biotechnology, this year, in the third week of October, a traditional olive harvest was organized. Collection plantations of olives and other subtropical fruits are used, apart from the need to preserve genetic resources, for various researches and practical training of students on basic applied studies in Mediterranean fruit growing and masters studies in Nursery.

Employees of the Center and the Faculty, students and guests usually participate in the harvest. This year, as many as 25 pickers participated in the harvest organized on October 19.

This year, the olives gave an abundant harvest, and it can be said that this is the most productive year since the olives in the collection have been harvested in an organized manner. Thanks to regular monitoring of olive pests as well as adequate agrotechnical measures, the olive fruit is of high quality, without damage, which is a basic prerequisite for good quality olive oil. The olives were picked manually with the use of mechanical tools (olive combs) and the mandatory use of nets for collecting olives. This method of harvesting, along with shipping the olives for processing immediately after harvesting, is a prerequisite for obtaining extra quality olive oil.

In total, about 600 kg of olive fruit were harvested, which were immediately transported to the Metović oil mill (MDS) from Stari Bar. The oil mill provides packaging for storing and transporting harvested olives, performs olive processing (cold pressing of oil), and filtration and delivery of oil.

As there are still olives left on the trees, in order to harvest all the olives, the harvest will continue on 26.10.2022.
