Researchers of the Biotechnical Faculty as Authors of Chapter of the Awarded Edition in International Fair

At the 65th International Book Fair, which was held in Belgrade from October 23 to 30, 2022, the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Srpska was declared the best publisher in the region for the edition "Sustainable Development and Management of Natural Resources". Researchers of the Biotechnical Faculty of the University of Montenegro have prepared two chapters of this edition.

The authors are Zoran Jovović, and Velibor Spalević and Milić Čurović, from the Biotechnical Faculty of the University of Montenegro.

The chapter "The Importance of Biodiversity Conservation in the Sustainable Use of Plant Genetic Resources" was prepared by Professor Jovović with colleagues from the Faculty of Agriculture in Banja Luka, the Maize Institute "Zemun Polje" and the Agricultural Institute in Banja Luka. It describes in detail the current state and importance of agrobiodiversity for global food production, as well as the increasingly pronounced trends of its destruction.

Bearing in mind that humanity is slowly reaching the planets key natural limits, the authors provide a range of measures to preserve these resources while the genetic diversity they possess is still available. Due to their real or potential value, this should be done as soon as possible, because in this way, long-term stable production of quality food based on sustainable agricultural practices would be ensured.

In the chapter "Soil erosion modeling using computer-graphic methods and geographic information systems", Spalević and Čurović present positions that explain the theory and methods of modeling soil erosion, sediment transport and deposition in surface water courses based on the application of computer-graphic methods and the use of geographic information system. The chapter presents the mathematical models that stand in the algorithmic backgrounds of models for soil erosion calculation, and are applied for the calculation of erosion intensity and modeling of this soil degradation process. The presented methods explain the movement of eroded material and the transport of sediment from the basins, its deposition downstream, and in this connection the impacts of these processes on the evolution of the natural landscapes of the studied areas. Some approaches that used GIS applications in simple and advanced models were discussed, and models used in the world and in the Western Balkan region were presented. The edition "Sustainable development and management of natural resources of the Republic of Srpska" was edited by academicians Novo Pržulj and Vaskrsija Janjić, full professors of the Faculty of Agriculture in Banja Luka, an institution with which the Faculty of Biotechnology has a long-term intensive cooperation.
