Upon completion of the course, students will be able to: explain the origins of civilization and the establishment of early socio-political communities within the contemporary German-speaking area, outline key developments in civilization and culture from the early Middle Ages to the end of the Baroque era in German-speaking nations, such as Christianization, urbanization, chivalry, mysticism, scholasticism, the role of monasteries, the formation of the empire, the Reformation, Protestantism, the emergence of the first universities, and linguistic societies. Additionally, they should be able to identify significant periods, individuals, and institutions that contributed to the early formation of German culture, considering various methods of periodization and the wider socio-political environment.
