The authenticity and originality of the work conducted by the Historical Institute of the University of Montenegro are primarily rooted in its tradition and the history of its establishment, existence, functioning, and influence as the oldest scientific institution in Montenegro, founded after World War II. As a custodian of Montenegrin history, responsible for its systematization, scholarly analysis, and presentation through its monographic and serial publications, the Institute is widely recognized by both the academic community and the broader public as a fundamental source of knowledge and a key reference point for studying and understanding historical processes in Montenegro and beyond.

In this context, special significance is attributed to Istorijski zapisi, the oldest scientific research journal in the country. It serves as the successor to Zapisi, first published in Cetinje in 1927 under the editorial direction of Dušan Vuksan. The journal’s extensive archival material, rigorous scientific analyses, and comprehensive interpretation of historical events, figures, and processes form the foundation of its quality and its nearly century-long scholarly impact.

Numerous monographic publications authored by historians and researchers from various social science disciplines affiliated with the Institute, as well as by other distinguished and renowned scholars of Montenegrin academia, have been published and disseminated under the Institute’s publishing program. The Institute further contributes to the dissemination of scholarly and professional research on significant historical and interdisciplinary topics through the organization of thematic conferences and roundtable discussions. These events bring together both emerging scholars and esteemed academic figures, fostering intellectual exchange among researchers from Montenegro and the wider region.
