On the Faculty of Political Sciences of the University of Montenegro, as on opened democracy school and education institution for dealing with the science on politics and research of political issues, we

UoM: What is the practical role of the Faculty of Political Science of the UoM in forming the professions of researchers and political analysts, journalists, diplomats, social welfare workers and experts in the field of the European integration?

DEAN MARKOVIC: Our country successfully implements obligations in the process of the European integration, with the indirect and immediate support of all social actors who perceive the process as a guideline in the overall progress of Montenegrin promotion.

In recent years, the Faculty of Political Science has been activating its students, actively teaching the contents of undergraduate and Master studies on the adoption of European values and standards. A large number of our graduates are actively involved in the process of European integration in the spheres of diplomacy, media, social policy, human rights, policies, public administration reforms, etc.

UoM: What is offered by the Faculty of Political Science and which profile of high school students should opt for the Faculty of Political Science?

DEAN MARKOVIC: Since its establishment, the Faculty of Political Sciences has been insisting on polyvalent educational profiles in the field of social sciences. Study programs developed at our Faculty, such as Politics-International Relations, Media Studies and Journalism, Social Policy and Social Welfare, are appealing to a large number of graduates from high schools in Montenegro. High school students from region are also interested in or study programs.

Knowledge in the fields of sociology, philosophy, law, history, psychology, as well as knowledge of foreign languages are a good basis for future students to adapt adequately to the challenges that they expect in the process of studying at the Faculty of Political Science. It is important that high school students understand what they like and that choice not to be imposed or conditioned, to be curious, creative and humane, and in that case, the Faculty of Political Science is the right choice for them.

UoM: You say that an intention to link the motive for obtaining a degree at the Faculty of Political Science with a motive for active participation in the political scene has existed for a long time…

DEAN MARKOVIC:

The nature of the studies being developed at the Faculty of Political Science indicates that there is a focus on studying politics as a science in part of our curricula.

Activism on the political scene is a matter of free civic choice for our present and future students. Certainly, among the graduates of the Faculty of Political Science we have persons who are recognized as political actors on the public scene. Also, our former students are present on the media scene of Montenegro (television, newspapers, online media), but also as direct actors of the process of political, social and social reforms that have been current for years.

UoM: Trainings of the FoPS provided to future journalist are also noticed…

DEAN MARKOVIC: By implementing a new curriculum, the Faculty additionally brought to students the challenges and contents of the occupations they have chosen to study through the integration of practice into curricula.

I would like to emphasize participation in the Do-investigative journalism ptoject, discover-media literacy, in cooperation with NGOs 35mm and Media Union of Montenegro, where students have passed training in research journalism and media literacy, and their research stories will be published in June in journals, as well as training in the field of agency and mobile journalism in cooperation with the MINA Agency, during which six students will undergo a two-week training in the news agency in June.

Thanks to the SEEMO organization, 30 students participated in the South East Europe Media Forum in Tirana in November 2018,.

UoM: At the study program Social Policy and Social Welfare, the Faculty has signed a set of agreements on cooperation with socially important actors in the field of social policy. What do these agreements mean for students?

DEAN MARKOVIC: These agreements have been implemented for the second year in a row in the social protection institutions, the Employment Agency and NGOs, recognized for their activities in the social sphere. Students of this study program are active in projects that encourage the construction of a social network in our society. Practice is realized through subject areas, but also a special obligation at the level of basic studies.

UoM: Does the Faculty play an important role in the implementation of the European Social Survey project in Montenegro?

DEAN MARKOVIC: At the initiative of the Ministry of Science, a team from the Faculty of Political Sciences implements the European Social Survey project in Montenegro (https://www.europeansocialsurvey.org/), theoretically and methodologically the most comprehensive international survey in the field of social sciences.

Simultaneously, it is the only social survey conducted within the Education Resources Information Center - ERIC and under the auspices of the European Commission.

By allocating the status of the state observer, Montenegro has gained its place within this important scientific venture. The ESS involves gathering data on attitudes, values and beliefs of citizens of the countries of Europe on various important topics, including democracy and citizen participation, family attitude, marriage, work, migration and social inequality, important and current problems such as climate change or economic crisis.

UoM:What is the significance of visiting guest lectures of experts (scientists, university lecturers, ambassadors, other diplomats, journalists ...) from the country and abroad, at the Faculty of Political Science UoM?

The significance of the arrangement of visiting lectures reflects in the possibilities for our students to acquire immediate knowledge on current affairs in the areas of their interest, experience to the challenges of their future professions, as well as contacts that may be important for their further career advancement.

The Faculty of Political Science insists on openness towards all potential actors from the social-humanistic activity who can provide support to the promotion of the knowledge of our students.

In the current year in the study program Media Studies and Journalism, we can highlight several extracurricular activities, among which are the visits of media experts with the support of the Council of Europe, such as Cezara Pitea from the University of Parma, David Goldberg of the University of London and Jelena Surculija-Milojevic from the Faculty of Political Science in Belgrade.

UoM: When talking about cooperation at the international level, what opportunities are open for students and faculty professors?

DEAN MARKOVIC: A large number of students of the Faculty of Political Science participate in international exchange programs. Such a practice has been established practically since the establishment of our Faculty.

We are proud to know that they are equally responsible and with the same success recorded significant results at eminent European universities.

Commitment to international cooperation and exchange is part of the extensive development policy of the University of Montenegro through various programs and competitions for scholarships based on bilateral agreements, as well as through Erasmus + and CEEPUS program. Students use these opportunities in order to gain international experience and new knowledge in different European countries. Academic staff tries to enrich their pedagogical experience and professionally improve themselves through the program of mobility and teaching training. This type of program is crucial for improving the quality of teaching.
