In recent days a new book has been published: Montenegro in the American Press 1918-1919; it is a collection of newspaper articles about Montenegro published in American newspapers during 1918 and 1919.

Several reasons determined the work on this project. First, in the historiography of the United States and Montenegro, the prevailing assessment is the scanty study of diplomatic and other relations between the two countries. Especially during the First World War, the Peace Conference in Paris, and the period after its holding. By this general position, the conclusion follows that the Montenegrin issue during 1918 and 1919 was not sufficiently the subject of interest of the historical science of both countries.

The improvement of the study of Montenegrin - American relations certainly belongs to the number of important reasons for the appearance of this edition. In that sense, the mentioned book is a supplement and logical continuation of the earlier collection of documents: Montenegro and the USA, In the Documents of the National Archives in Washington 1905-1918, published by the Historical Institute of Montenegro in 2010. But while the focus of the mentioned edition was on diplomatic material, in the new publication of the Historical Institute, attention was paid to the attitudes of American public opinion and its perception of Montenegro, in the last war and the first postwar year of the First World War. News from Europe initially reached the American press from British newspapers. However, as the war progressed, so did the atmosphere in American journalism.

Apart from the stated reasons, the work on this publication was determined by the fact that the relations between the two countries were not systematically studied through the prism of the attitudes of the American public opinion, ie the writing of the American press about them. That aspect, ie. examining the influence of the media on politics, society, culture, and other segments of life were one of the motives for the creation of the book. The results it offers also provide answers to the question of what the media meant in the First World War, ie how much propaganda activities had an impact on the course of the war and international diplomatic relations.

Through this publication, contemporary researchers get the opportunity to get acquainted with the content of texts published on the East Coast of the United States. Writing papers from that part of the United States is important because of fact that many immigrants from the Balkans and Montenegro lived and worked in large industrial cities in the eastern United States

All of the above were the reasons for the appearance of such a publication, as a publication of the Historical Institute of UoM. The book was prepared for the press and the introductory study was written by: Dr. Biljana Vučetić, from the Historical Institute in Belgrade, and Dr. Radoslav Raspopović from the Historical Institute of UoM.
