Aleksandar Jerkov, PhD, a literary theorist and historian, is a Full Professor at the Faculty of Philology, University of Belgrade, and the Director of the "Svetozar Marković" University Library in Belgrade.


Academic and Administrative Career

Professor Jerkov served two consecutive terms as the Vice-Dean for Science and International Cooperation at the Faculty of Philology and has held various other significant positions. His teaching portfolio includes:

  • At the Faculty of Philology: 20th-century Serbian Literature, Introduction to the Interpretation of Literary Works, and related elective courses.

  • Graduate and Doctoral Programs: Courses in Cultural Theory, Contemporary Hermeneutics, and Literary Theory at the Academic Alternative Educational Network, the Faculty of Philosophy in Novi Sad, and the Faculty of Philology and Arts in Kragujevac.

  • International Guest Professorships: He has taught Serbian literature at Slavic departments in the United States (University of Michigan, Ann Arbor) and Germany (Eberhard Karl University of Tübingen), as well as the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Zagreb. Additionally, he has delivered invited lectures at numerous Slavic departments across Europe (Germany, France, Italy, Poland, Ukraine, Hungary, Greece, and regional countries) and the U.S.

Editorial and Publishing Work

In addition to his academic career, Aleksandar Jerkov has held several prominent editorial roles:

  • Editor of Student.

  • Editor-in-Chief of Vidici.

  • Editor-in-Chief of the "Prosveta" Publishing House.

  • Editor at "Plato" and Editor-in-Chief of "Mono i Manjana," where he headed the production of the five-volume Great Larousse Encyclopedia.

  • Editorial board member for various other journals.
