Basic Information

The societal commitment to establishing a higher education teaching and research organization in the field of mathematical and physical sciences was officially constituted as early as 1970 when the Assembly of the Socialist Republic of Montenegro adopted the Development Program for Higher Education Institutions in Montenegro for the period 1971–1975. The concept of such an institution was not yet fully defined at that time, so the Program mentioned two possible names: the Institute for Mathematics and Its Applications and the Faculty of Mathematical and Physical Sciences.

In the Development Program of the "Veljko Vlahović" University for the period 1976–1980, the institutions structure was more precisely defined, highlighting the need for the establishment of the Institute of Natural Sciences as a joint teaching and research unit within the University.

Simultaneously with the development of the Faculty of Technical Sciences in Titograd, its Department of Mathematics and Physics also strengthened in terms of personnel. As a result, through the transformation of the Faculty of Technical Sciences, which received social verification on July 14, 1978, the Institute of Mathematics and Physics was established as the first step in implementing the University Development Program.

On April 7, 1980, approval was granted for the curriculum of the Mathematics Department and the Physics Department. The first generations of students enrolled in these departments in the 1980/81 academic year.

On May 17, 1988, a decision was made to approve the renaming of the Institute of Mathematics and Physics to the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics (PMF) and the transformation of the Mathematics and Computer Science Department.

A significant step in the development of PMF was the establishment of the Department of Biology. The first generation of students in this department enrolled in the 1991/92 academic year.

In the 2001/02 academic year, the study program in Computer Science was introduced within the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, followed by the Applied Study Program for Higher (later Advanced) Education in Computer Science and Information Technology the following year.

Since the 2004/05 academic year, teaching at the faculty has been organized according to the principles of the unified European education system, in accordance with the Bologna Declaration. In 2007, a fundamental reorganization of the study programs at PMF was carried out.

For about ten years, the University Computing Center (URC) operated within PMF as a separate organizational unit. Its role was to support teaching and research activities at the University of Montenegro in the field of computer science. Currently, PMF has its own Computing Center, which functions as an independent organizational unit. The Computing Centers task is to support teaching and research activities at the Faculty in the field of computer science and to provide services to third parties.
