Play features students of the Faculty of Dramatic Arts: Marija Vujović (Evelyn Brings, the mother), Darija Pravilović (Kess, the daughter), Iskra Zeković (Jo, the daughter), and Kristina Mrkić (Sherry, the daughter), under the mentorship of Professor Branimir Popović. The production was prepared in collaboration with teaching associate Milica Šćepanović.

Drama “Independence”, written in 1984, is one of early yet significant works of American playwright Lee Blessing. The story is set in a small town of Independence, Iowa, and follows the life of Evelyn Briggs and her three daughters — Kess, Sherry, and Jo. Through their complex and tense relationships, Blessing explores themes of family conflict, generational divides, personal freedom, and the cost of independence. Each daughter, in her own way, strives to find a path toward autonomy, while their mother’s dominance and emotional manipulation hold them back. Although it is an intimate drama with a small cast and a simple set, the play carries a strong emotional charge. The author reveals how the struggle for independence — whether familial, personal, or social — always comes with sacrifices and conflict.

Lee Blessing is renowned as an American playwright whose works have been performed throughout the United States and abroad. His plays often explore human relationships, moral dilemmas, and socio-political tensions. He is known for combining serious themes with humour and irony, while his works typically feature simple staging and powerful dialogue.
