Whether Montenegro will host the International Institute for Sustainable Technologies of Southeast Europe (SEEIST), which will bring together scientists and researchers from the region to fight cancer and treat patients with heavy ion radiotherapy, along with biomedical, clinical and other trials, is a decision to be made very soon to adopt the SEEIST Host Country Selection Working Group.

We talked about the SEEIST initiative with a professor at the Faculty of Science, University of Montenegro and a member of the Supervisory Board of this initiative, full prof. Marom Šćepanović, PhD.

“The importance of this initiative is reflected primarily in the fact that proton and ion therapy is the only method of "radiation" that can be used on tumors insensitive to conventional methods of radiation, so-called radioresistant tumors, then tumors surrounded by healthy sensitive tissue, such as brain tumors, and it is also the only therapy for pregnant women and children ", explains professor Šćepanović.

In February this year, she was appointed by the Government of Montenegro as a member of the Supervisory Committee, which consists of two representatives of the SEEIST initiative member states: all former members of the SFRY (Croatia ad referendum), Bulgaria and Greece. In 2019, in order to be able to apply for various funds, the SEEIIST Supervisory Committee established the SEEIIST Association, which is based in Geneva.

The Federal Government of Switzerland, which supports this initiative, hosted the XII meeting of the Supervisory Committee (SC) in Bern, where the ministers of the countries of the region once again expressed their wholehearted commitment to this initiative, and among them were Foreign Minister Djordje Radulovic and Minister education, science, culture and sports assoc. prof. Vesna Bratić, PhD.

Minister Bratić, recalls Professor Šćepanović, pointed out at the meeting that Montenegro had already planned a location for the potential construction of part or the entire Institute, which meets the current conditions for the location. The planned place has an area of about 60,000 m2, complete infrastructure, a few kilometers away from the airport and is located about 10 km from the Clinical Center of Montenegro.

Professor Šćepanović concludes that this is a historically important project that will bring multiple benefits, both in the field of human health and in the field of development of the scientific potential of Montenegro and the development of science in general.
