Professor Jaćimović Talks about Chemistry in the University of Montenegro

Željko Jaćimović, PhD, head of the Chemistry study program, which will be launched in the 2025/26 academic year at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics of the University of Montenegro, spoke on the “Boje jutra” TV show about the activities being undertaken in preparation for enrolling the first generation of students. In the interview, he presented the admission scoring system, eligibility of secondary school graduates, as well as the structure of the program and opportunities this newest study program at the University of Montenegro will offer to prospective students.

Approximately 20 students are expected to be enrolled in the first year. The program is modern in its design and divided into two modules—teaching and research—aligned with the needs of the labour market, particularly in the education sector.

During the first two years, students will attend shared courses in basic chemical disciplines, while in the third year they will choose one of the two modules. The teaching module includes courses on teaching methodology, didactics, and school experiments, while the research module provides a classical scientific approach and focuses on the development of laboratory and research skills.

To enrol in the program, students must have completed a general high school (gymnasium) or a secondary medical school and must pass an entrance exam in chemistry. This exam tests basic knowledge of the subject in line with the current high school curriculum. Recommended literature includes current textbooks and collections of problems.

Professor Jaćimović particularly emphasized the existing need for qualified personnel in primary and secondary schools across Montenegro, which was one of the key motivations for launching this program.

The program is being implemented with the support of the Ministry of Education, Science, and Innovation, and will be taught by professors from the University of Montenegro, including young colleagues who have earned or are nearing completion of their doctoral degrees. It is expected that 90–95% of the teaching will be delivered by internal university staff, contributing to the stability and quality of the educational process.
