Olympics of Knowledge 2025, the largest national competition in mathematics, natural sciences, and programming for elementary and high school students in Montenegro, will be officially opened on May 10 at the University of Montenegro. The Vice Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics and one of the organizers, Nikola Konatar, appeared on this occasion on the Television of Montenegro and Television Vijesti. He pointed out that the goal of the event is to promote STEM fields among young people, especially at a time when interest in these sciences has been declining, and there is also a lack of teaching staff in these areas.

The competition gathers around 450 students from all over the country. It is organized in several categories: mathematics in seven categories (different grades), biology, chemistry, and physics in six, and programming in two (elementary and high school). The tasks are adapted to the age of the competitors, with the expectation that they also know the material from previous grades. While the children participate, round tables for teachers are held in parallel, with the aim of exchanging experiences and improving teaching.

The awards are symbolic – a diploma and a book – because the funds are limited, but the significance and prestige of the event remain high. The organizers want the competition results to be recognized during university admissions, but they are still waiting for confirmation from the authorities. Teachers play a major role as mentors, even when they are not experts in every field, as well as parents and schools, whose support motivates the children.

Konatar concluded that talent is indeed important, but persistence, effort, and continuous work make the difference. Many students remain loyal to these competitions year after year, and the goal is to include an even greater number of young people and show them that natural sciences can be interesting and valuable.
