After passing this examination, the student will be able: 1. To identify the key ideas, their authors and works relevant to the understanding of the corpus of ancient and mediaeval philosophy of art. 2. To analyze Plato’s dialog The Symposium and Aristotle’s Poetics and point to the main issues in these philosophical treatises. 3. To demonstrate the comprehension of the classical concept of art through the theory of mimesis and the doctrine of the beautiful. 4. To discuss the mediaeval understanding of art in the context of distinguishing between divine and human creation. 5. To explain the meaning of the categories of contemplation, symbolism and allegorism in the mediaeval understanding of art.
