The Ministry of Spatial Planning, Urbanism, and State Property, Directorate for the Implementation of State Guidelines in the Field of Architecture, at the request of the University of Montenegro (UCG), has approved the conceptual architectural solution for the reconstruction and upgrade of laboratories, as part of the technical faculties building (Lamela C) at UCG.

At the initiative of UCG Rector, Prof. Dr. Vladimir Božović, after several decades, activities on this project have commenced, and it is certain that conditions for carrying out reconstruction works on the building will be created this year.

The architectural concept (Intervention) on the existing building is strongly conditioned by the need to respect the existing values of architectural heritage from the second half of the 20th century. At the same time, it is conditioned by the real need for expanding the existing capacities. Regarding the vertical extension of the building, which includes valuable heritage, the prevalent architectural approach is to generate a neutral architectural gesture in relation to what is found, without any pretensions to emphasize or correct the existing. The intervention on the existing building, with a gross area of about 6,000 m2, is based on a geometrically neutral vertical continuation of approximately 3,000 m2, in a flexible steel structure, visually separated from the existing corpus, materialized in a transparent membrane that unifies the internal spatial components.

Functionally, while maximizing respect for existing interventions that arose due to the increase in the number of students and laboratory research, it has been assessed that, with minor interventions, it is possible to maintain the predominantly existing organization of internal functional units, retaining flexibility and divisibility of rooms, but with a more logical composition and better connection of internal spaces with atriums. Functionally, the second floor offers a more flexible spatial arrangement, rooms - laboratories of larger areas that are adequately lit, with visually optimal connectivity with the environment. On this floor, the connection between the sections in the form of bridges is additionally strengthened, enabling quick and short connections from the amphitheater to all units that use this space, with the aim of involving various factors in the research base, strengthening the interaction of employees, students, and users of the building.

The authors of the conceptual design are: Prof. Dr. Svetlana Perović, Dr. Sanja Savić, Dr. Jelena Bajić Šestović, Dr. Marija Milikić, and MSc Nikolina Sekulović from the Faculty of Architecture at UCG. The technical documentation was prepared in collaboration with the design office SMART STUDIO D.OO. Podgorica.
