International Translation Day - September

International Translation Day - September

The date September 30 is celebrated as International Translation Day. By marking this day, recognition is given to the translation profession and experts in the field of foreign languages and intercultural communication, who, through their translation work around the world, make an immeasurable contribution to bringing nations closer together, facilitating international dialogue and cooperation, and enable the functioning of vital economic, educational, diplomatic, judicial, security, health and numerous other institutions and services. Therefore, at the General Assembly of the United Nations in 2017, a resolution was adopted declaring September 30 as International Translation Day.

The importance of the translation profession has been recognized since antiquity. However, systematic scientific study began in the 20th century with the dynamic development of translatology as a science of translation, which was stimulated by increasingly intense intercultural contacts and globalization trends. This resulted in its introduction into curricula and programs at universities around the world in the middle of the last century and further academization through the organization of numerous translational conferences, the publication of scientific journals and studies by eminent publishers and the implementation of international translational projects.

The importance of this profession for the functioning of the European Union, one of whose basic principles is multilingualism, is evident in the fact that only at the European Commission there are two separate directorates that deal exclusively with translation (written and oral) and that employ over 3,000 expert translators and other language experts. (terminologists, legal linguists, etc.), while throughout the European Union there are over 250 programs for the study of translation, both at the undergraduate level and at postgraduate and doctoral studies.
