The scientific monograph by Boris Vukićević, PhD, Full Professor of international relations and diplomacy and Dean of the Faculty of Political Sciences at the University of Montenegro, entitled “La Santa Sede e l’Europa nella seconda metà del XX secolo” (“The Holy See and Europe in the Second Half of the 20th Century”) has been published by the publishing house “Cacucci editore” from Bari.

In this 352-page study, the author analyses organization of diplomacy of the Holy See and its place in international politics and international law, diplomacy of the Holy See during the Cold War, especially exploring relations with certain socialist states in Europe, but also with Western European countries, the USA and international organizations, as well as issues of post-Cold War dialogues and challenges that the diplomacy of the Holy See faced during the pontificates of Pope Benedict XVI and Pope Francis.

In the preface to the book, Gaetano Damaco, PhD, Full Professor of church and canon law at the “Aldo Moro” University of Bari, points out: “The role and nature of the Holy See are topics that always arouse political and scientific interest, especially in critical world situations for international coexistence, as is the case today. Boris Vukićević’s study follows this interest and presents itself in a scientific panorama with some peculiarities that deserve to be highlighted and justify attention of readers and scholars.

“On pages of this interesting and thoughtful monograph, author analyses weight and role of the Holy See, focusing on some key moments demonstrating contribution of Vatican diplomacy in the recent history of Europe. Among these moments, the period of the so-called Cold War, according to a far-sighted analysis, shows how and to what extent Vatican diplomacy influenced the development of institutional relations within Europe and in terms of the global repercussions that followed,” Prof. Damako states, concluding that “therefore, Boris Vukićević’s study, due to the aforementioned characteristics, and due to other scientific qualities, which also belong to international panorama, cannot be considered only as a further reflection on the Holy See, but it encourages careful reading and deep reflection.
