New Springer Edition: The First Multidisciplinary Research on the Mountains of Montenegro and Slovenia

In March 2026, the book "Discourses on Mountains of Montenegro and Slovenia" was published by Springer. The editors of the publication are Dr. Matija Zorn (ZRC SAZU Anton Melik Geographical Institute, Ljubljana, Slovenia), Dr. Olga Pelcer-Vujačić (Historical Institute of the University of Montenegro), and Dr. Peter Mikša (Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia).

Montenegro and Slovenia have been connected to their mountains for centuries. Throughout history, the two countries have largely followed different paths, yet certain geographical, cultural, and historical characteristics of their mountains have remained remarkably similar. This duality—their similarities on one hand and differences on the other—served as a primary inspiration for this publication, which represents the first multidisciplinary work on the geographical, cultural, historical, and other aspects of mountains in Montenegro and Slovenia.

The volume consists of twenty-nine chapters contributed by forty-five authors. The books title, using the plural "discourses," emphasizes the diversity of topics discussed, all of which shed light on the mountainous regions of both countries. Chronologically, the publication spans from prehistory to the present day, spatially covering the majority of mountain areas in Montenegro and Slovenia.

Very few countries, even significantly larger ones, can boast a diversity of mountain landscapes comparable to those found in these two nations. Special attention is paid to mountains as a national "symbol" and their role in the formation of national identity. The discourses also focus on the colonization of the mountains and subsequent history, leading up to contemporary settlements. Furthermore, the work highlights the cultural landscape and heritage, including monuments and architecture. Given that mountains are vital forest areas and their exceptional landscapes constitute a large portion of national protected areas, significant attention is also devoted to these themes.

This is the first book in English to compare mountain discourses between countries in Southeast Europe. Several researchers from the Historical Institute of the University of Montenegro are authors of individual chapters in this book, which is available via Open Access at the following link: https://link.springer.com/book/10.1007/978-3-031-99017-5

Book promotions will be organized soon in Ljubljana and Podgorica.
