Priject Harmonia- final scientific report

The HarmoNIA project (Harmonization and Networking for contaminant assessment in the Ionian and Adriatic Seas) was implemented within the Adriatic-Ionian Program (Interreg ADRION) priority area Sustainable Region in the period from February 2018 to June 2020. The main objectives of the project were: to strengthen transnational frameworks for better interaction of existing marine management databases in order to promote data availability and improve knowledge of the marine ecosystem, as well as harmonized monitoring and assessment of pollutants in the Adriatic-Ionian marine environment. The Adriatic and Ionian Seas are considered "hot spots" of biodiversity because they are habitats of plant and animal communities that have great ecological significance. At the same time, this area is under pressure from the intensive exploitation of natural resources and the traffic zone of maritime transport, maritime transport, so pollution is a key issue that requires a common approach to its assessment and management. Also, HarmoNIA aimed to address the heterogeneity of methodological approaches and information used to assess good environmental status (GES) and to overcome the problem of fragmentation in terms of geographical coverage of available data.

As a result of these activities, two regional strategies have been written to improve coherence in monitoring and coordinating actions in the event of accidents, four methodological guidelines, new data handling tools have been developed, and a transnational network of institutions has been established to exchange expertise and information on harmonized monitoring of the marine ecosystem in order to combat environmental threats.

The project involved a multidisciplinary team of 10 project partners consisting of research institutes and regional authorities from six countries (Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro, Albania and Greece). The leading partner was the National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics (TGS) from Trieste, Italy.

A synthesis of the achieved goals, outcomes and tools produced as a result of the implementation of project activities is available in the FINAL SCIENTIFIC REPORT:
