SODA Project Kickoff at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering

Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the University of Montenegro has been awarded a grant by the H2020 Fed4FIRE+ consortium to implement a one-year project tackling a wireless low-power communication technology called 6TiSCH. SODA is the second project in a row that is granted funding from European funds, after successful completion of the SPOTS project.

6TiSCH technology is being defined within the standardization group of the same name as part of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), the organization that defines the technical solutions behind the Internet. Our institution participates in development of two future Internet standards (RFCs), through Dr. Mališa Vučinić a researcher at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering. First standard tackles the problem of secure network access in 6TiSCH networks (see link). The second standard defines a distributed algorithm to calculate link capacity among nodes in a network (see link). One of our co-authors on the standard proposal is Prof. Kristofer S.J. Pister of UC Berkeley, who set the grounds of the today's Internet of Things paradigm, through the Smart Dust project, proposed in 1997. Internet of Things today is one of the hottest topics in the academic, as well as industrial research.

The SODA project tackles the last phase during the development of the 6TiSCH technology: the network performance evaluation of the standardized solution in an automated manner. SODA is part of a wider academic initiative around low-power networking technologies whose goal is to define the evaluation methodology, as well as the whole process of experimental data collection in a standardized manner. This initiative today gathers researchers from 18 different institutions, including the University of Montenegro (see link).

The SODA project has kicked off on September 1st, 2018. One month after the project kick-off, our researchers attended the FEC4conference organized by the Fed4FIRE+ consortium, where they demonstrated a prototype of the web platform that automates the performance evaluation process of 6TiSCH networks on experimental testbeds that are part of the Fed4FIRE+ infrastructure.
