Institute of Marine Biology, University of Montenegro is one of the partners in the COST project "Marine Animal Forest of the world" (MARIANAS) CA20102 MAF-WORLD and a participant in the first hybrid meeting that will be held from July 7 to 9, 2022 in Bremen (Germany). Together with the representatives of about 20 other countries, the topic of marine animal "forests", which is the largest biome on Earth, is being discussed. In fact, they are groups of animals that mainly feed by filtering water, but with their three-dimensional structure they create communities similar to forests on land and are very important for a large number of other organisms and the functioning of the marine ecosystem. We aim to develop a common protocol and reach a consensus on the most appropriate ways to study and understand the role of animal "forests", as well as initiate initiatives for the management, restoration and conservation of these communities. The project is led by Professor Sergio Rossi from the University of Salento (Lecce, Italy), which was recently published in the journal Science (https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.abq7583).

The protected "forests" of the golden coral Savalia savaglia in the Bay of Kotor are, for now, one of the few areas that have been placed under protection primarily for the protection of marine animal "forests". https://maf-world.eu/
