Fifteenth Knowledge Olympiad of Montenegro Held in Podgorica
The Fifteenth Knowledge Olympiad, a traditional competition for primary and secondary school students in the fields of mathematics, natural sciences, and programming, was held on Saturday, May 10, 2025, at the building of the technical faculties of the University of Montenegro in Podgorica.
The competition was organized under the patronage of the Rectorate of the University of Montenegro, the Montenegrin Academy of Sciences and Arts, the company doMEn, and the Centre for Eco toxicological Research, with the implementation by the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics of the University of Montenegro and the Society of Mathematicians and Physicists of Montenegro.
The formal opening was held in the presence of a large number of participants, mentors, and organizers. On behalf of the organizers, the competition was opened by the Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, Miljan Bigović, PhD, the Vice President of the Society of Mathematicians and Physicists of Montenegro, Svjetlana Terzić, PhD, and the Knowledge Olympiad Coordinator, Goran Popivoda, PhD, who addressed the participants with words of support and encouragement, emphasizing the importance of investing in the knowledge and education of young people.
Students competed in four areas – mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology – while the programming competition is scheduled for May 16. The tasks were carefully designed according to the competitors’ age group but also required a deeper understanding of the curriculum and logical thinking. Special attention was given to high school students, who competed according to the gymnasium program. The chemistry competition was carried out with the support of the Faculty of Metallurgy and Technology of the University of Montenegro.
Parallel to the competition, round tables were organized for teachers, dedicated to the exchange of experiences and the improvement of teaching in STEM fields. Teachers and mentors of competitors from all parts of Montenegro, as well as other interested attendees, took part in the round tables. Current curricula and textbook sets in use were discussed, along with many useful suggestions for their improvement. There were also discussions on the status of teachers and the challenges they face, as well as possible ways to improve student achievement in the field of natural and mathematical sciences.
The Knowledge Olympiad remains an important segment of national support for talents, with the goal of affirming and popularizing natural and mathematical sciences. Through such initiatives, the continuous development of talented students is encouraged and scientific curiosity in youth is nurtured, with the aim of building a generation ready to contribute to contemporary scientific challenges.
The tasks and solutions for all categories are available on the official website of the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics of the University of Montenegro.
