The Institute of Marine Biology at the University of Montenegro is participating in the kick-off meeting of the IPA ADRION project "Creating Resilient Areas to Develop Lifecycles and Ecosystem Services" (CRADLES) in Šibenik, Croatia, on September 4th and 5th, 2024. The projects focus is on a holistic approach to the conservation and restoration of nursery areas in the Adriatic-Ionian region.

Representatives of project and associated partners are attending the meeting, with the agenda covering the start of the project and its activities, as well as an overview of work packages and obligations.

As a project partner, the Institutes activities include scientific research in the field at some of the identified nurseries for fish and other marine organisms in Montenegro, particularly in areas where seawater and freshwater mix, with a focus on the Bojana River delta and the Tivatska Solila. The emphasis will be on areas characteristic for species typical of these habitats (e.g., the European eel, Anguilla anguilla), as well as non-native species, such as the blue crab (Calinectes sapidus).

The Institute also leads Work Package 4, "Science-Society Interactions for Capitalisation and Uptake of the Results."

The CRADLES project is co-funded through the European Unions IPA ADRION funds. The total project budget is €1,716,167.85, with the Institutes project budget amounting to €147,572.00, of which 85% is funded by EU funds, and 15% is the Institutes contribution. The lead partner is the Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries from Split, and the project consortium, along with the Institute of Marine Biology at the University of Montenegro, includes eight project partners and seven associated partners from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Greece, Croatia, and Italy.
