At the formal session marking the Day of the Municipality of Kotor, Dr Vesna Mačić, Research Advisor at the Institute of Marine Biology of the University of Montenegro, received the municipality’s most prestigious recognition – the “21 November” Award. This distinction is presented for outstanding merit and achievements of special importance for the development and promotion of the town.

In addition to Dr Mačić, this year’s laureates of the award are the City Music of Kotor 1842 and the public institution Primary School “Nikola Đurković” from Radanovići.

For many years, Dr Vesna Mačić has been one of the key researchers at the Institute in the field of seabed studies, and her scientific work has made a major contribution to understanding and protecting marine ecosystems. This year has been marked by a particularly notable success: Dr Mačić took part in a research mission to Antarctica, within international cooperation with researchers from the Bulgarian scientific base “St. Kliment Ohridski” and the research vessel RSV421. During her stay in one of the most sensitive and harshest ecosystems on the planet, she focused on studying biodiversity, the presence of solid waste, and its impact on Antarctic marine organisms and the environment.

With this mission, Dr Vesna Mačić became the first scientific researcher not only from Kotor, but also from Montenegro, to officially represent our country in Antarctica. This achievement represents an important step in the international recognition of Montenegrin science and a confirmation of the high scientific credibility of the Institute of Marine Biology.

The Institute of Marine Biology of the University of Montenegro extends its heartfelt congratulations to Dr Vesna Mačić on this prestigious award, which represents yet another acknowledgment of her many years of work, dedication and contribution to science, as well as to the promotion of our institution, Kotor, Boka Kotorska and Montenegro at the international level.
