Mediterranean Connecting through SHERAMED Project Design for Environmental Protection of the Mediterranean

Since threats for the environment are increasing without knowing political borders, it requires coordinated cross-border action based on gathered evidence and analysis. This is the aim that connected partners within the project SHAREMED, Sharing and enhancing capabilities to address environmental threats in Mediterranean Sea.

Partners on this cross-border project are scientific institutes and higher education institutions working with research of pressures of ecosystem of the Mediterranean, coming from Italy, Spain, Malta, Slovenia, Croatia, France and Portugal.

Project manager from the Marine Biology of the University of Montenegro dr Slavica Petović says that the project will connect and increase abilities of Mediterranean, regional, sub regional local authorities and scientific community for joint estimation and possible mitigation of threats.

“Project has started recently in Trieste, with a two day meeting, February 13th and 14th. Among others, SHAREMED will define current and regional strategies, create common data base and develop atlas map of condition and dangers, so occurrences may be perceived and detected with integration though joint portal and to improve possibility of prediction. There will be research of potentials new methodologies of observation and definition of road maps, guidelines action plans”, Petrovic said.

According to her words the project will improve ability of joint assessments about important issues such as pollution (garbage in the sea), change of trophic regimes (eutrophication/oligotrophic), weather/climate changes (sea thermal waves, heating up) as well as to increase the possibility for find approach and usage of existing data and information.

“Project will use knowledge gained by previous projects and it will contribute to defining long-term strategies and action plans for estimation and solving threats for the environment on the Mediterranean”, Petovic concludes.

Total values of the project is 3,100,000.00 € out of which the Sea Biology Institute UMNE has 70,000.00€.
