University of Montenegro’s Faculty of Economics leads another Erasmus+ project: European Commission grant for "Web3 Innovation HUB"

For the second consecutive year, the Faculty of Economics at the University of Montenegro has been awarded a grant as the coordinator of an Erasmus+ Capacity Building in Higher Education (CBHE) project for the 2021-2027 period. The project, "Web3 Innovation HUB," with a total value of €890,000, is set to be implemented over the next three years. As highlighted by Dr. Tamara Backović, assistant professor and project coordinator, “This project represents a unique opportunity for the Faculty of Economics at the University of Montenegro to lead innovation in higher education in the Balkans. Through the Web3 Innovation HUB, we will create a platform for the development of new skills, entrepreneurship, and collaboration between regional institutions and industry partners.”

The "Web3 Innovation HUB (W3IH)" project is designed to respond to the growing significance of the Deep-Tech industry, particularly Web3 technology, in education and scientific research. Web3, or the third generation of the internet, allows users to control their own data and interactions, providing greater privacy, security, and freedom online. At the core of Web3 technology is blockchain, which enables secure and transparent digital transactions without intermediaries.

Deep-Tech refers to technological innovations based on advanced scientific research and engineering solutions, including artificial intelligence, advanced algorithms, IoT devices, and other sophisticated technologies. Western Balkan countries have significant potential for further technological advancement but face challenges related to the skills and infrastructure needed to implement Deep-Tech/Web3 technologies.

The project aims to enhance regional innovation and entrepreneurial capacities in the Western Balkans by developing Web3 and entrepreneurial skills, promoting green blockchain solutions, and creating a decentralized science (DeSci) community. Project partners will establish a regional Web3 Innovation HUB focusing on three key segments: developing and implementing new Web3 courses in higher education curricula to improve the skills of students and staff in the Western Balkans, establishing a Web3 startup incubator with a focus on green blockchain solutions, and creating a decentralized science network (DeSci) to build a research community using DeSci tools to foster innovation.

Academic partners in this project include the Faculty of Economics at the University of Split, the Faculty of Economics at the University of Sarajevo, the University of Mostar, and the Faculty of Organizational Sciences at the University of Belgrade. Industry partners include UBIK (Croatias Blockchain and Cryptocurrency Association), Attic42 and Moonstruck from Serbia, the NGO Digitalizuj.me from Montenegro, and INTERA Technology Park from Mostar.

Erasmus+ CBHE is one of the most competitive and prestigious European programs aimed at modernizing higher education and strengthening partnerships between academic institutions in the region. Last year, the Faculty of Economics at UCG, also as coordinator, received an Erasmus+ grant for the project "Promoting the Internationalization of Higher Education Institutions in Montenegro through Capacity Building for English-Language Study Programs (ME-Study in English)," which aims to increase the number of English-taught study programs and strengthen international cooperation among Montenegrin universities.
