Linking research and industry – experiences through the Nuqleus programme and EDIH CROBOHUB++

The Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing, University of Zagreb (FER) is not just involved, it’s actively driving a multitude of projects and programmes. These initiatives are not merely about commercializing research results, they’re about forging a robust and symbiotic relationship between research and industry. The impact of this significant work, which will be presented by the esteemed Professor Hrvoje Džapo during the MONUSEN Summer School 2024, is set to be nothing short of profound.

In 2015, FER founded the Innovation Centre Nikola Tesla (ICENT) to strengthen applied research and facilitate knowledge transfer to industry. In 2016, FER launched the student startup incubator SPOCK, which involved 125+ participants from 10+ faculties of the University of Zagreb over six generations. SPOCK was then transformed into a new deep-tech venture builder, Nuqlues, in 2022, with a shift of primary focus on scientific research groups. These initiatives were linked with activities within the European Digital Innovation Hub EDIH CROBOHUB++ from 2023, where FER acts as project coordinator. EDIH CROBOHUB++ strives to provide means for a more efficient digital transformation of the Croatian economy in the fields of manufacturing technologies, smart agriculture, energy and environment, and public and government administration through a range of customized services that transfer the expertise and infrastructure of the project consortium to end users. EDIH services cover categories such as testing before investing, access to finance, education and skills, innovation ecosystem and networking, and supporting SMEs and public sector organizations (PSOs) to improve their digital maturity.

Understanding the transformative role of European Digital Innovation Hubs (EDIHs) is crucial, particularly for businesses, researchers, and policymakers. This lecture is designed to not only familiarise participants with the role of EDIHs as a new instrument of the Digital Europe Programme (DEP) for the digital transformation of industry and society, but also to inspire them about the potential of these initiatives. They will also be introduced to the venture builder model and how they can apply it to enhance collaboration between academia and industry in the commercialization of scientific research results.

The training will be organised at the premises of the Faculty of Maritime Studies in Kotor. The lecture agenda, as well as more information about the lecturer, is attached.
