The University of Montenegro Faculty of Medicine invites citizens to participate in international scientific research project

The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Montenegro together with Clinical Center of Montenegro invite all interested citizens diagnosed with diabetes type 2 and diabetic retinopathy to check a qualification for the study in scientific research international project.

"Citizens who qualify will receive detailed control ophthalmological and neuropsychological tests during the study," said assoc. prof. Nataša Popović, PhD, from the Medical Faculty of UCG, manager of this project.

It is also the address to which all interested citizens who meet the conditions can contact to participate in the project, via email projekat.recognised@ucg.ac.me

It is a research within the Horizon 2020 project, entitled "Retinal and cognitive dysfunction in type 2 diabetes: Detection of common signaling pathways and identification of patients at risk for developing dementia" - RECOGNISED ".

The project started with the realization on January 1 last year and will last until December 31, 2023. The aim of this project is to study the practical value of fundus examinations in identifying patients who already have type 2 diabetes and who have an increased risk of developing cognitive impairment and dementia. People with cognitive impairment have an increased risk of making a mistake when taking therapy, which ultimately leads to an increase in the number of serious complications associated with diabetes. For that reason, it is extremely important that such persons are recognized in time and that they are provided with adequate help and care", Popović explained.

The governing body of this project is the Vall d’Hebron Hospital Universitari of Barcelona, Spain. 11 clinical centers from seven European countries are participating in the clinical part of the project. The European Commission has allocated funding for the entire RECOGNISED project worth almost six million euros.

"The importance of this project for the University of Montenegro is reflected in the fact that this is the first Horizon 2020 project for the Faculty of Medicine, and the second for the Clinical Center of Montenegro. Through project activities, our experts and specialists in ophthalmology, neurology and endocrinology will have the opportunity to cooperate and exchange knowledge and experiences with the world's leading experts in these fields. Our experts will participate in the formation of the latest standards for the diagnosis and treatment of complications of diabetes. This will greatly, in a positive sense, affect the quality of health care for citizens, as well as the education of medical students, which takes place both at the Faculty of Medicine and at the Clinical Center of Montenegro", said Popović.
