In Memoriam: Milinko Šaranović, PhD, Academician of MASA and Rector of the University of Montenegro

Herewith we inform our colleagues and students that on April 28th, 2020, in Podgorica, academician Milinko Saranovic, a long-time professor and one of the founders of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the University of Montenegro, passed away.

Milinko Saranovic was born on October 14th, 1929 in the village of Potkraj, near Danilovgrad, where he graduated from elementary school. He discontinued his education during the war because of his active participation in the NFF, since 1943. He completed secondary Technical School – Electrotechnical in Titograd. He graduated from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering in Belgrade, Department of Energy, in 1956, where he received his doctorate in 1970.

After graduating on the Faculty, he worked until 1963 in the Electricity Community of Montenegro. He was the head of the study and construction department and then the technical director of the Community.

He has participated in various projects in the field of electricity in Montenegro and Yugoslavia. For training, he stayed several months abroad. At the Faculty of Engineering in Titograd he was elected Assistant Professor (1963), Associate Professor (1970) and Full Professor (1978) for the subject Basics of Electrical Engineering.

He was Vice-Dean on three occasions, and from 1971 to 1973 the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering. He held the positions of Vice-Rector (1976–1980) and Rector (1982–86) of Veljko Vlahovic University.

He was the President of the Presidency of the Union of Yugoslavia Universities and a member of the Standing Committee of the Conference of Rectors of Europe when he received the Plaque and the Charter of the University of Yugoslavia. As a representative of ZUJ he was a member of the Federal Committee for Science, Technology and Informatics.

As Rector of the University he established cooperation with Lomonosov University in Moscow, the University of Bari, the University of Karlsruhe and the University of Rostov-on-Don. He has been a full member of the Academy of Engineering of Yugoslavia since its founding in 1998, as well as a member of the editorial boards of several scientific and professional journals.

The subject of his scientific interest was theoretical electromagnetics. Particularly significant are his research in the field of electricity development, both in Montenegro and Yugoslavia (Montenegro's Energy Potentials and Utilization Potentials, Development of the Basic 380 kV Network of Yugoslavia and the Strategy for the Development of the Energy of Yugoslavia by 2050).

He was awarded the Order of Work with the Gold Wreath (1969) and the Order of the Republic with the Silver Wreath (1978), and he was also awarded the Golden Plaque "Boris Kidric" (1962) and the "Nikola Tesla" Plaque (1985).


Most important published papers: On the Essence of the Physical Theories of Faraday and Maxwell (1971); Electrostatics (1973); Electrokinetics (1973); Fundamentals of Electrical Engineering II - Linear Electric Circuits (1981); Fundamentals of Electrical Engineering I - Electric and Magnetic Fields (1982, 1990); Selected Works (2003); Montenegro's Hydropower Potentials (co-authorship) (2007); Water Potentials of Montenegro (co-authorship) (2010). He was elected Associate Member of the Montenegrin Academy of Sciences and Arts on March 1st, 1985, and November 19th, 1993. He was Secretary of the Department of Natural Sciences (1985–1995), Secretary General of the Montenegrin Academy of Sciences and Arts (1995–2001). In 2002, he served as Vice President of the Academy. Dear Professor, thank you infinitely and thank you for all contributions you have made to the development of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and the effort you have made in educating many generations of electrical engineers. We are proud of your work and achievements and we will always highlight them as a shining example for generations to come.
