16th International Conference of Association of Germanists of the Southeast Europe Budva in November

The German Language and Literature Study Program of the Faculty of Philology at the University of Montenegro will organize the 16th International Conference of the Association of Germanists of Southeast Europe (German: Internationale Konferenz des Südosteuropäischen Germanistenverbandes, SOEGV) under the title “(Changing) Values in the Context of Language, Literature, and Didactics” (German: Werte(wandel) im Kontext von Sprache, Literatur und Didaktik).

The three-day conference will be held from November 6 to 9 in Budva and will bring together more than 120 participants from twelve European countries. The event would not have been possible without the financial support of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).

This conference, first organized in 2007 in Sarajevo, has for years gathered professors, doctoral candidates, and young researchers with the aim of contributing to the diversity and development of research fields within German studies, as well as fostering the growth of an intercultural network of Germanists from Southeast Europe and German-speaking regions. It provides a platform for the exchange of scientific ideas, theoretical and practical approaches, and the presentation of new research in the fields of language, literature, translation studies, and the didactics of the German language.

In this regard, this year’s theme — the question of values and their transformation in the context of German language, literature, and didactics — opens up a wide spectrum of perspectives and research topics. The linguistics section examines the influence of social values on language change, language use, identity, and language policy. The translation studies section focuses on the relationship between translation and values, including cultural norms, ethical issues, and the transfer of meaning across different contexts. The literature section explores how values are represented in literature across different periods, their reinterpretation, and their connections to social and historical transformations. The didactics and teaching methodology section investigates ways in which values and their transformations can be integrated into German language teaching.

In addition to these sections, the conference program will feature keynote lectures by Diana Feick, PhD, from Friedrich Schiller University Jena, Nadja Thoma, PhD, from the University of Innsbruck, and Clemens Ruthner, PhD, from Trinity College at the University of Dublin.

A literary program will also accompany the conference: supported by the Austrian Embassy, there will be a promotion of a book by a popular Austrian writer of Montenegrin origin, who writes under the pseudonym Toxische Pommes (“Toxic Fries”), and, with the support of the Goethe-Institut, an interactive evening of slam poetry featuring the German slam poet Dalibor Marković.

This is the second time that the German Language and Literature Study Program of the Faculty of Philology at the University of Montenegro is organizing the International Conference of the Association of Germanists of Southeast Europe. The first conference was successfully held in November.
