At the Faculty of Philology, during the summer semester, the realization of the module Media Literacy began, whose authors are docent Dušanka Popović, PhD and docent Marijana Cerović, PhD, within the project Preparation of future teachers in the Western Balkans in the field of education for democracy and human rights. The project holder is the European Vergeland Center, the financier is the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Norway, and the implementing partner is the University of Montenegro (Faculty of Philology and Faculty of Philosophy) and the Department of Education.

The module is attended by 20 students, seven from the Study Program for Montenegrin Language and South Slavic Literature, three from the Study Program for Serbian Language and South Slavic Literature and 10 from the Study Program for English Language and Literature. The aim of this module is to test its effectiveness in preparing students for understanding democratic citizenship by learning about the reference framework of competencies for democratic culture established by the Council of Europe and understanding the importance of media literacy for human rights and community involvement.

During the lecture, four key dimensions of media literacy are discussed: 1) technical ability, i.e. handling and access to media, their proper use and knowledge of their creative possibilities; 2) cultural and ethical aspect of the media, their social activities and media policy; 3) cognitive media ability, i.e. understanding, critical analysis, interpretation and evaluation of media content and 4) the ability to create them. The nature of different media is studied with special reference to digital media and the speed of information transfer in modern times, the way of creating and transmitting media messages as a special type of construct, and the specifics of construction and deconstruction of their meanings.

In addition to the fact that the student-future teacher should be media competent, he must think about the application of this knowledge in teaching, which means that: he teaches about the media, applies the media in teaching, enables students to read media texts, produces media content and works practically with students in the field of media culture. Classes with the contents of media literacy will be realized by students in the school if it is possible in the conditions of a pandemic.

Apart from the University of Montenegro, the project involves the University of Teacher Education in Zurich, as well as 12 universities / faculties from five Balkan countries (Serbia, Northern Macedonia, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo).
