Preparing Future Teachers in the Western Balkans: Education for Democracy and Human Rights

On 24 – 26 November 2021, within the project  Preparing future teachers in the Western Balkans: Education for Democracy & Human Rights a conference was organized by the European Wergeland Centre  in Durres (Albania) which gathered participants from eight universities from Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo and Albania.

During the workshops the participants considered the achieved results and the experiences acquired with regard to the work in the conditions of pandemic, finding of adequate methods, techniques and forms of work within the selected and implemented modules, preparation of adequate contents, and the manner in which the achievements of this project can be made sustainable in the existing circumstances. Also, opportunities offered by the Reference Framework of Competencies for Democratic Culture (RFCDK) of the Council of Europe, but also possible restrictions were considered, as well as Seventeen objectives of sustainable development (Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development, UN, 2015), with a special focus on those pertaining to education.

As part of this project, during the summer semester of the academic year 2020/2021 the module Media Literacy was provided at the Faculty of Philology. Classes were attended by 10 students from the Study Program Montenegrin Language and Literature and the Study Program Serbian Language and Literature and 10 students from the Study Program English Language and Literature, and it was realized by the authors of the program ass.prof. Dušanka Popović and ass.prof. Marjiana Cerovic. The results of this module and the topicality of the subjects and contents covered, as well as the interest of students, recommend it for an intensive offer within regular or optional student activities at the faculty.

The conference was attended by representatives of the University of Montenegro ass. prof. Dušanka Popović (Faculty of Philology) and ass. prof. Nataša Krivokapić (Faculty of Philosophy) and members of the Project Steering Committee prof. dr. Bojka Đukanović (EWC expert) and Vidosava Kašćelan (Institute for Education).
