Underwater Stories: French Submarine Monz

As the water dramatically penetrated and filled the hull of the submarine, Captain Morillo ordered the crew to evacuate. Making sure that all the sailors saved their lives, he stayed with two non-commissioned officers in a sinking submarine and became a legend with his feat.

The submarine Monge, named after the 18th century mathematician and Minister of the Sea Gaspar Monge, was launched in December 1908. It belonged to the class of submarines Pluviose, which was built in 1905 for the French navy on the principle of double hull. On the surface, a submarine of this class was powered by two steam engines, and after diving, the propellers were powered by electric motors. The Pluviose class also included the Fresnel submarine, which was covered with sand near Ada Bojana, where it ran aground and was chased by an Austro-Hungarian warship and plane on December 5, 1915.

After the outbreak of the First World War, the submarine Monge, like the submarine Fresnel, was part of the French Mediterranean fleet. She sailed into the Adriatic with the task of blocking Austro-Hungarian ports and bringing the enemy fleet into naval battle. During the battle of Durres, on December 29, 1915, patrolling under the command of Lieutenant Roland Morillo, the crew of the submarine Monge saw the cruiser Helgoland and the destroyer in the escort. Diving into preparation for the attack, Helgoland spotted her and attacked her by hitting her. She emerged with a damaged hull. As the crew left her, her commander remained on board to ensure her sinking. Morillo was posthumously honored by renaming the captured German submarine UB-26 after him.

The Monž submarine is a mystery of the Montenegrin submarine. The place where her wreck lies is still not located. The geographical determinant "in front of Kotor", which describes the location of the battle in historical sources, in the then nautical vocabulary represented a wide area of the coast of today's Montenegro.
