120 Years since Birth of Professor Vladislav Brajković

Today, January 25, 2025, marks 120 years since the birth of Professor Vladislav Brajković. A European expert in maritime law, Professor Brajković significantly contributed to the revitalization and development of Montenegros maritime industry after World War II, as well as to the renewal and elevation of maritime education to the higher education level, with his knowledge, social engagement, enthusiasm, and above all, dedication to his native Boka Kotorska.

He began his education in Kotor and Split and completed his law studies at the University of Belgrade. He earned his doctorate in maritime law at the University of Aix-Marseille. Professor Brajković was the founder of the Chair for Maritime and Transport Law at the Faculty of Law in Zagreb, where he served as dean for three terms. His scientific and professional work profoundly influenced the development of maritime law in Yugoslavia and on an international scale.

Professor Brajković was a full member of the Yugoslav Academy of Sciences and Arts (JAZU) and the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts (SAZU), establishing himself as a recognized authority in both domestic and international legal circles.

In 1964, Professor Brajković played a pivotal role in the renewal and reaffirmation of the Boka Navy (Bokeljska mornarica). At that time, a new Statute was adopted, and he was elected Admiral, a title he held until his passing.

The library of Academician Vladislav Brajković is an extensive and valuable collection of professional works, predominantly related to the field of (international) maritime law, which was the focus of his prolific academic career. Thanks to the late Professor Dr. Marija Radulović, a professor of maritime law at the Faculty of Maritime Studies in Kotor and the niece of Professor Brajković, who inherited his valuable library, the collection is now housed within the Maritime Library. It serves as a treasure trove for researchers in the field of maritime law.

In 2019, the Maritime Library of the Faculty of Maritime Studies in Kotor organized an exhibition titled “Old and Rare Books from the Legacy of Academician Vladislav Brajković,” as part of a project co-funded by the Program for the Protection and Preservation of Cultural Heritage for 2019 by the Ministry of Culture of Montenegro (LINK).

It has been announced that, in accordance with the Law on Memorials, a request will be submitted to the Municipality of Kotor for the installation of a memorial to Professor Dr Vladislav Brajković in Perast.
