Špiro Ivošević, PhD, Awarded with the Acknowledgment for Special Contribution to Development of Science and Research and International Positioning of the University of Montenegro

Full Professor at the Maritime Faculty in Kotor, Špiro Ivošević, PhD, has been awarded recognition for his significant contribution to development of scientific research and international positioning of the University of Montenegro in 2024. The award was given by the Rector of UMNE, Vladimir Božović, PhD, at a ceremony session of the UMNE Senate.
The award was given based on the proposal of the Council of the Maritime Faculty in Kotor, which, after reviewing achievements of a previous academic year, concluded that Mr Ivošević, PhD, completely deserves such recognition due to his extensive scientific research activity. During this period, Špiro Ivošević, PhD, co-authored four scientific papers published in highly ranked international journals listed in the Web of Science (SCI (E)) database. These papers focus on interdisciplinary research in chemo metrics, structural degradation and aging of ships, and innovative solutions for strengthening the steel structures of ships.
Prof. Ivoševićs work was also published as a chapter in an international monograph in the field of corrosion and materials. He participated in several international conferences, where he was the author or co-author of seven professional and scientific papers presented in European and regional contexts. His work is also distinguished by a representative number of citations, which serve as an important indicator of scientific recognition.
Contribution of Špiro Ivoševic, PhD, contribution has been particularly recognized in motivating young researchers and involving them in doctoral and master’s studies, where the research is directed toward solutions that could position Montenegro as a country promoting offshore wind energy, thereby enabling potential projects of national and broader importance.
In addition to his academic contributions, Špiro Ivošević, PhD, has also played an important role in international projects—as coordinator of project teams from the Maritime Faculty in Kotor on two projects funded through the Interreg Program, co-financed by the European Union. The MARROBO project focuses on developing capacity for the application of maritime robotics, laying the groundwork for the acquisition of a next-generation underwater drone and the creation of the first training course for underwater robotics operators at the University of Montenegro. The ROBORIVER project is oriented toward the use of advanced underwater robots that enable monitoring and analysis of water in areas that are difficult to access along the Danube River.
During the 2023/2024 academic year, he served as the chair of the organizing committee for the 3rd International Maritime Conference – KIMC 2023, as well as the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Maritime Sciences (JMS), published by the Maritime Faculty Kotor.
Alongside his home institution, Prof. Ivošević was also engaged during this period as a lecturer at the Maritime Faculty of the University of Dubrovnik, contributing to regional academic cooperation and promoting the University of Montenegro in an international context.
This award not only recognizes the continuous scientific contribution of Špiro Ivošević, PhD, but also his dedicated efforts to enhance the quality of higher education, foster international collaboration, and strengthen the research activity of the University of Montenegro. The Maritime Faculty in Kotor expresses special satisfaction at this significant recognition, which reflects the high professional standards and scientific excellence of its faculty members.
