The Faculty of Maritime Studies Kotor of the University of Montenegro has commenced activities within Work Package 2 titled A 2.2 “Executing cross border sea and waters litter monitoring and clean up activities”. This activity includes the implementation of cross-border monitoring programs as well as the application of developed digital tools for information collection and data analysis through a Bottom up approach.

Within this activity, the use of digital tools and technologies for the surveillance, identification, and mapping of waste in marine and freshwater ecosystems at the level of participating countries is envisaged. The aim of this activity is to collect precise and comprehensive data on the types, quantities, and locations of waste in the marine and riverine environment. For collecting and sharing information, the developed digital platform and mobile application "Remedies" is used.

The Faculty of Maritime Studies Kotor, in collaboration with colleagues from the Institute of Marine Biology, conducted the first series of litter monitoring activities at Jaz, Ivana, and Blatna beaches between September 10th and 11th, 2025. During this period, a total of 3.32 kg of plastic waste and 8.89 kg of other types of waste were collected. The most common categories of collected waste were: tobacco products with filters, fragments of non-foamed plastics sized 2.5 cm to 50 cm, other identifiable processed, worked, or treated wooden items smaller than 50 cm, and plastic crisps packets/sweets wrappers.

The next planned monitoring of the mentioned beaches will be conducted at the beginning of December 2025. Besides project partners, representatives of the target groups are also expected to participate in these activities.
