The Laboratory of Maritime Archeology is a member of the UNESCO UNITVIN network for underwater archaeology

The Laboratory of Maritime Archeology has officially become an associated member of the UNESCO UNITWIN underwater archaeology network. The network consists of the worlds most famous universities that have programs and research units in underwater and maritime archaeology.

Recognizing the development demonstrated through various activities at the Faculty of Maritime Studies in Kotor, within the Laboratory of Maritime Archeology, Center for Research, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, the members of the UNESCO UNITWIN underwater archeology network at the meeting in Paris, 16 June 2023 supported the associated membership of the University of Montenegro in UNESCO UNITWIN underwater archaeology network.

An associated membership in the network will contribute to greater visibility of the University of Montenegro opening opportunities for networking and cooperation with colleagues from other universities. Participation in the work of the UNESCO UNITWIN network fosters active participation of Montenegro in the development of scientific disciplines related to underwater cultural heritage at the global level. This is the de jure fulfillment of the states obligation to institutionalize this scientific discipline following the ratification of the UNESCO 2001 Convention on the Protection of Underwater Cultural Heritage in 2008.

The Laboratory of Maritime Archeology is grateful to the team of the Center for Research, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, the dean of the Maritime Faculty in Kotor, the Rectorate of the University of Montenegro and the Ministry of Culture and Media who supported the application for associated membership in the UNESCO UNITWIN network.

The UNESCO UNITWIN Underwater Archeology Network aims to increase capacity in member countries through international cooperation. It will promote the protection and research of underwater cultural heritage, by formally connecting universities and professional training institutions working in the field of underwater archaeology. The network acts as a bridge between academia, civil society, local communities, research and policy makers. The network complements the work of the UNESCO Secretariat for the 2001 Convention on the Protection of Underwater Cultural Heritage. The convention is one of the seven basic conventions in the field of culture. Adopted in 2001, it intends to enable countries to better protect submerged heritage.

UNITWIN stands for University Networking Program. The program was established in 1992 following the relevant decision of the UNESCO General Conference adopted at its 26th session.
