Eight active international projects are being implemented at the Medical Faculty of the University of Montenegro in partnership with about 40 renowned scientific and educational institutions, which are also aimed at improving public health, primary health care, the problem of Alzheimer's dementia and cancer. They involve 50 employees, both from pre-clinical and clinical areas.

Vice Dean for Science of this faculty, Aneta Bošković, PhD, believes that this data indicates that strengthening competitiveness of scientific research is one of the priorities for the development of the Faculty of Medicine.

"The commitment of the Faculty of Medicine to the further development of scientific research is best reflected in establishment of the Center for Scientific Research (CNIR), which aims to improve infrastructure, strengthen staff and increase investments necessary for competitive and modern research in biomedicine. In addition to the Center, through Erasmus + project PHELIM, with participation of partner institutions from country and abroad, the Center for Public Health was formed, and during this school year, classes on doctoral studies in the field of public health began, " Boskovic said. When it comes to projects, special mention is made of participation in the H2020 RIA project RECOGNISED, which proposes an evaluation of retinal condition as a potential biomarker for identifying patients at high risk of cognitive impairment and dementia who already suffer from diabetes type 2.

"For the first time, the Faculty of Medicine participates in prestigious Research and Innovation Scheme H2020 as a partner institution, and benefits from participating in this multidisciplinary consortium of 15 European institutions for the Faculty of Medicine, and thus the University of Montenegro, are multiple - from infrastructure and human capacity development to significantly better international positioning and visibility, as well as increasing competitiveness ", Bošković said.

Implementation of all projects contributes to health, in different ways, as Professor Boskovic explained. "Establishment of joint provision of preventive dental health care through establishment of a Joint Knowledge Center for development of necessary preventive programs and primary health care capacity for early detection and intervention, is the main goal of the MADE project, within the Interreg IPA CBC Croatia - Bosnia and Herzegovina," she said.

Two Erasmus + projects aim to improve and introduce new curricula in the field of public health and pain medicine.

“National research project will use new methods to stratify patients with colorectal cancer and Alzheimer’s dementia according to the risk for the progression of these diseases. The project is funded by the Ministry of Science. Then, there is the CEBIMER project, a multidisciplinary program in which 10 institutions from the country and abroad participate, supported by an innovative grant from the Ministry of Science, in order to establish future centers of excellence in Montenegro ", Bošković adds.  Expertise and knowledge among colleagues are exchanged within the program Guest lecturers - a project with colleagues from Norway, Italy and Serbia, in the field of multidisciplinary diagnostics - molecular medicine, and is supported by the Ministry of Science. In addition, through a bilateral project with Serbia, as a basis for planning and programming physical activity.

"A total of 379 scientific papers published in SCI / SCIE and SCOPUS databases, as well as numerous participations in international congresses, speak about the quality of scientific research work at the Faculty of Medicine and completed project activities," Professor Bošković concludes.
