The Faculty of Maritime Studies Kotor and the Institute of Marine Biology of the University of Montenegro, together with the University of Camerino from Italy, will conduct research as part of the program titled "Grande Rilevanza" from 2022 to 2024. The project, named “Marine Ecological Composites from Adriatic Sea Waste – SeaComp,” has been approved for funding in the environmental sector with a specific focus on Blue Growth. The project began implementation on January 1, 2023, and will run for 36 months.

The project aims to develop an innovative class of marine composites with significantly reduced environmental impact. These new eco-materials will be created and used for the construction of boats, particularly in the production of hulls and other structural components of small boats (<10 meters). Many research groups have been working for years to replace traditional materials, primarily fibreglass. Through the project, marine resources will be exploited in an intelligent and environmentally sustainable manner, proposing appropriate solutions to mitigate the impact of fibreglass on marine pollution. Additionally, project activities will lead to significant advancements in skills and technology within Montenegro, placing the environment and Blue Growth at the core of research and development activities. Moreover, the project will demonstrate how marine waste can be transformed into technological resources.

The expected outcome of the project will focus on the development of a new class of fibre-reinforced composites for shipbuilding with improved ecological characteristics. These materials will be created by combining traditional and natural components using various hybridization approaches. Different combinations of material components and processes will be explored and experimentally verified by the research teams of both participating institutions.
