Through these two projects Institute for Maritime Biology will have provided over 150 000 Euros from EU funds for scientific-research activities.

Within the project Promotion of Transnational Network for a Small Coastal Fishing and Aqua Culture in Adriatic-Ionian Macro Region (ARIEL) eight partner institutions will cooperate, per two key institutions in this area of Italy, Croatia, Greece and Montenegro (Institute for Maritime Biology and Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development). Total foreseen budget of the project is 1, 5 million Euros out of which about 103 000 Euros is allocated for Institute for Maritime Biology.

Aim of the project is establishing innovative transnational network between academic-research centers, legislative and executive authorities for definition of two sectors of crucial importance for economy of Adriatic-Ionian macro region: small coastal fishing and aquaculture.

In the project Harmonization and Networking for Estimation of Contaminators in Ionian and Adriatic Sea (HarmoNIA)  10 institutions are included, as follows: Italian National Institute for Protection and research of the Environment, Region of Western Greece and Helen Centre for Sea Research (Greece), National Institute for Biology and Slovenian Agency for Environmental Protection (Slovenia), Institute for Oceanography and Fishing and Institute Ruđer Bošković (Croatia), Institute for Maritime Biology of the University of Montenegro and Agricultural University of Tirana (Albania) as well as 4 affiliated partners: Directorate of the Ministry for Economic Development from Italy, the Municipality of Durres from Albania, the Ministry of Sustainable Development and Tourism from Montenegro and Ministry for Environmental and Natural Protection from Croatia. Main goal of the project HarmoNIA is strengthening transnational frames for better interaction among existing data bases for management of sea area with the aim to promote availability of data and improvement of knowledge about sea ecosystem, in order to ensure solid basis for implementation of Frame Directive on Sea Strategy (MSFD) and UNEP / MAP protocol in Adriatic-Ionian region.

The project will provide basic tools for estimation of risk from contamination in vulnerable coastal zones of case analysis area. Results of this project will be useful for institutions included in implementation of  MSFD Directive and UNEP / MAP protocol, local, regional and national organs competent for assessment, management and preservation of the environment, public and private bodies included in planning the sea and coastal belt, as well as research institutions.
