Restored Sand Dunes within the Project WELCOME

Today, the Public Company for Marine Assets Management of Montenegro organized promotion of activities that were carried out in previous six months in order to rehabilitate sand dunes in Montenegro in the hinterland of Velika plaža in Ulcinj. Today, renewed dunes were presented to public at the location directly behind the Europa beach.

“This pilot project, first of its kind in Velika plaža and Montenegro, was implemented within the WELCOME project, which is funded by the Cross-Border Cooperation Program for Italy, Albania and Montenegro, and in addition to Velika plaža, the project envisages restoration and protection of dunes by the Albanian National Agency for the Coast and the Municipality of Leće ", PC Morsko dobro states.

In Montenegro, the WELCOME project is implemented by the Public Enterprise for Marine Management and the University of Montenegro - Institute of Marine Biology in Kotor in cooperation with partners from Italy and Albania.

“Activities on protection and revitalization of sand dunes at the selected location on Velika plaža in Ulcinj, which were carried out, were related to: rehabilitation and biological restoration of sand dunes through sand embankment, restoration of specific flora that naturally inhabits this area and installation of protective structures contributing to natural dune formation; installation of protective structures for the preservation of sand dunes (wooden fences and walkways) whose design was selected through a competition for architects; making and setting up art installations made of natural and processed wood collected during beach cleaning actions, which were selected at a public call for artists and NGOs, and equipping the area with information and educational boards, benches and waste bins, ”they point out.

Sand dunes in their natural form are formed in hinterland of the beach by depositing sand, which is why they have a role in preserving stability of beach from erosion. In addition, extremely rare vegetation grows in these areas, so in parts of Velika plaža where dunes are preserved, you may find plants protected by domestic legislation and EU directives. "Success of this project, which was presented today, is extremely important for the Public Company for Marine Management, as well as for all institutions in Montenegro that care about the environment, and also represents a matrix by which we will continue to work with users. Let us restore beach to the original, natural ambience of Velika plaža ”, they point out in Morsko dobro. Art installations together with wooden fences, walkways and other equipment, designed and installed by environmental NGOs NGO "Our Action", NGO "CEPS" and NGO "Green Net" contribute to the protection of endangered parts of sand dunes by raising public awareness about waste from the sea and importance of dunes, which is one of the goals of the project "WELCOME". We remind you that the project "WELCOME" (WatEr LandsCapes sustainability thrOugh reuse of Marine littEr - Sustainability of water landscapes with the reuse of marine litter) is aimed at sustainable management of marine litter and strengthening cross-border cooperation, all in order to solve the problem of marine litter.  "Activities of this project are aimed at removing waste from beaches, monitoring waste from sea as well as restoration and protection of sand dunes using wood waste collected from beaches," PC Morsko dobro stated.
