Upon passing the exam, it is expected that students will be able to explain and interpret basic concepts of maritime navigation; describe and analyze the foundations of orientation at sea; describe and compare different positioning techniques; implement courses and routes based information obtained from charts (paper and electronic); define and describe basic chart projection used in maritime navigation, as well as numerical and graphical methods of construction of Mercator (white) chart and gnomonic projections; describe and explain the elements of earth and ship magnetism and confirm the total approximate formula of deviation; interpret methods of determining the magnetic compass deviation and compensation methods; perform control of magnetic deviation; apply spherical trigonometry in solving loxodromic, orthodromic and combined navigation tasks.
